Inside: If you want to hold onto your pumpkins and pine cones a little longer, follow along on my fall house tour. Using a mix of real and faux pumpkins, thrifted finds, and décor I already had on hand, you’ll love my house decorated for fall.
Like the merciless leaves falling on my freshly raked lawn, it feels pointless to hold out on keeping the fall decorations up.
Yesterday, on a walk with my dog, I noticed the multicolored twinkling lights of a Christmas tree already decked out and perched in the front window of a neighbor’s house. Another had a ladder tilted against the house, a strand of icicle twinkle lights dangling half hung from the awning. Everything from our favorite magazines to the displays at stores to our overexcited neighbors entice us to put up the holiday decorations earlier every year.
If you’ve already moved on to the twinkle lights and ornaments, no hard feelings. But if you want to hold onto fall a little longer — like me — come along on my fall house tour.
For most of my fall decorating, I used what I already had. Colors I’m drawn to regularly — simple grays, rustic browns, and splashes of copper — easily transitioned into a fall palette. Take the above bookshelf for example.
How I transitioned this bookshelf for fall:
- Kept my favorite copper mugs and glassware in place
- Added a copper tea kettle and cream and sugar pots for shine
- Switched out a different artwork for my deer painting in a fall color palette
- Moved any décor or houseware that didn’t fit with my fall color palette into the cupboard below
It didn’t take a lot of changes to make the bookshelf fall ready.
I like to mix natural finds with housewares and a minimal amount of faux décor.
After several years of sitting in storage, it felt right to use fall décor pieces I already owned, like pretty velvet pumpkins, faux metallic pumpkins, and faux cotton stems. They all work together and don’t look overly fake when paired with items from nature. Real pumpkins, Indian corn from the farmers market, and pine cones from my yard balance out the fauxness.
Housewares, like my favorite ceramic vases, a copper mug, and tree bark candle holders finish off the display.
When decorating for fall, I like to sprinkle fall decorations here and there throughout my house. If you go overboard, your house will feel like a theme park. I’m going more for cozy fall vibes.
Some easy ways I decorated for fall:
- A small cast iron pumpkin that I scored for $1 at a fall festival sits beside my favorite aloe vera plant
- An orange velvet pumpkin keeps my succulents company in a display on the living room dresser
- The refrigerator door gets some cheer from a dollar store farm sign
While I didn’t decorate the outside of the house too much, it did get a little fall love. Though retired for the season, my wood potting bench makes a nice spot to display a bowl of pine cones and a big maple leaf I found on a walk. A rusty license plate has the perfect patina to go with the display.
Even though my neighbors are decking the halls faster than the jack o’ lanterns can rot, I’m holding onto fall a little while longer.
It feels like there hasn’t been time to finish a fall bucket list let alone move onto holiday shopping. I’m still over here reminiscing about pine cone crafts and wishing I’d had time to make some fabric pumpkins.
Even so, I too can feel the excitement building for Christmas and, especially, holiday decorating but … it’s not time yet. I’m going to enjoy my fall décor for a few more weeks at least.
