I wasn’t going to decorate for Halloween. I really wasn’t. Why buy décor that I’m only going to use once a year? I prefer to decorate for fall with items I already have. Then, my parents gave me a box of old Halloween decorations we used when I was a kid. Fake hands and feet. A bunch of oh-so creepy fake rats. And one string of lights. I figured, why not put it out? It took me all of five minutes to make my doorstep spooktastic. Happy Halloween! Keep up with Red Leaf Style! Pictures of Fall Things
Here’s what fall looks like around my home right now. Pumpkin snicker doodle cookies. Crisp red apples picked fresh from the apple tree in our front yard. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and beeswax candles decorating the house. I love this time of year! And last but not least, because everyone needs an autumn oven mitt… What does fall look like around your house right now? Keep up with Red Leaf Style! Pumpkin Carving Day
Carved pumpkins don’t last very long, so I may as well as show them off. I have no tips or tricks for you. My pumpkin carving knowledge is pretty standard. Cut a circle around the stem. (Don’t get too close to the stem or the hole will be too small.) Gut the thing. Trace your template onto the pumpkin using one of those spinny wheels that make the holes. (This is always the hardest part for me.) Carve it out. Done. This is the first year I haven’t attempted a way-too-ambitious pumpkin and I couldn’t be happier. Not only was I done in about 30 minutes, but my back and legs weren’t aching and I had energy to do other things that day. For your enjoyment, a few pictures of carving a lovely owl, vampire girl and pumpkin on a pumpkin (that one’s mine!). Have you carved pumpkins yet? What did you carve this year? How to Find Unusual Pumpkins
Bright orange pumpkins are Halloween must-haves. We carve them into Jack-o-Lanterns. They decorate our front porches. Those round orange pump-a-kins are basically the symbol of this time of year. You gotta love them, but you’re not limited to orange pumpkins for decorating your home this season. Heirloom lovelies with twisty stems and haunting shapes are an entirely new level of spooky. You can find heirloom pumpkins in eerie shades of pale green, soft orange and ghostly white. Some even look like they’re covered in warts. Just check your local farmers market or pumpkin patch. Don’t forget to look for acorn squashes and gourds in creepy shapes and colors too. Here are a some beauties from my local market. I love all of these Cinderella-style pumpkins. Fall Decorating on the Front Porch
Decorating the front porch for the fall season is a must for me. Nothing looks more cheerful than orange pumpkins and bright fall mums decorating a doorstep. Even if you do something as simple as setting one pumpkin on the step and hanging an autumn-themed wreath on the door, giving your doorstep a little seasonal style will put a smile on your face every time you come home. This year I didn’t put more than five minutes of work into decorating my front doorstep. And, most of it I found by wandering around my front yard. If you reimagine how you think about décor for your doorstep, you can find what you need by just looking around your home or taking a walk around your neighborhood. Take a look at my doorstep. The pinecones were scavenged from my front yard. The mums are plants I bought last year that reappeared. They’re annuals! The mums haven’t bloomed yet, but they’ll show their cheery yellow buds soon. My boyfriend already had the antlers. And, I added a few gourds and miniature pumpkins (which I did buy this year) for color. (Please ignore the icky wrought iron screen door. It came with...
