You know you’re really into thrifting when you’re braving the snow and scoping out the seriously slim pickings of estate sales during the winter. Last weekend I stopped by a local estate sale that was pretty junky–my favorite kind! Here’s what I found: Large wire basket, $1 Fish posters, $1 4 metal bookends, $1.50 My favorite days to go to estate sales are on Saturdays and Sundays because everything is usually half off or discounted even more. Easy DIY Key Garland
It’s almost Valentine’s Day and I haven’t decorated my home at all. I’m not big on tons of frou-frou décor anyway, but it is nice to at least recognize the holiday. So, I put together this quick project. It’s a decorative key garland. In honor of Valentine’s Day I’m thinking of it as a “key to my heart” garland. (Any other time of the year it can just be a plain ol’ key garland.) This do-it-yourself key garland is about as simple to make as it gets. Take some twine and some vintage bone keys, loop the twine through the keys, string them up and you’re done. When I think about it now, it might seem kind of strange that I just happen to have a bunch of old keys stored up waiting for me to use them in a project. You don’t have things like that just laying around your house? In that case, you can definitely scope out antique malls, thrift stores and and secondhand shops for a few of these vintage gems. They’re not too difficult to find. Would you do this five-minute project? Do you have an obsession with old keys too? I want...
Wooden Chair Makeover: After
Remember this wooden chair I found in a pile of garage sale leftovers bound for the trash? The chair just needed a little bit of a makeover to transform it into one pretty piece. One leg was a bit cracked, but I fixed that with some wood glue. (You can’t even tell it was ever broken.) And, the yellow cushion had seen better days. That was the bulk of the transformation. I just recovered the cushion using a staple gun and a pretty piece of linen I found at an estate sale. It barely took any work because I just covered over the fabric that was already on the cushion. I didn’t even have to take anything apart. In case you missed it, here’s the before pic: And, here’s the after: Don’t ever let a chair cushion that’s stained or in an ugly fabric deter you from getting a chair you love. Many times the cushion is easily removable and you can recover it yourself. Recovering this cushion took me about 15 minutes. P.S. I got this adorable ethnic pillow cover in Portland, Oregon. What do you think of the chair? Do you like the transformation? Keep up with...
Weekend Finds: Garage Sale Lamp Shades
This weekend I stopped at a few garage sales and picked up two lamp shades for $3 each. Normally I can’t find cute lamp shades while thrifting. I love picking up lamp bases at the Goodwill, DAV and other secondhand stores. You can score really stylish secondhand lamp bases for cheap. Finding lamp shades is not so easy. At secondhand stores the lamp shades are usually dented or way outdated, if you find them at all. Lately, I’ve done well searching for lamp shades at garage sales. I’ve found that garage salers tend to have near perfect condition lamp shades because they bought them and they didn’t work for their particular lamp. And, then I buy them for less than a fourth of the price of what they would cost new. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this other lamp shade yet, but for $3 I know I’ll put it to use at some point. Check out past weekend finds! Have you found any good garage sale finds lately? What Should I Do With It?
My awesome friend found this medicine cabinet sitting on the curb and snagged it for me. She knows about my love for free furniture. Do I have any idea what I’m going to do with it? No, not really. Am I excited about it any way? Of course! It’s not as big as it looks. The width is about the size of a standard medicine cabinet, maybe a little wider. And the length is probably about four feet. It doesn’t look like it would be too difficult to hang on the wall. Maybe I could just set the shabby shelf on top of a dresser? I’m really not sure. I need your ideas! Tell me what you think I should do with it? I need some creative inspiration. Please oh-please drop me an idea in the comments… Keep up with Red Leaf Style! Cute Portland Apartment Roundup
If you’ve been following along, you know that I spent a long weekend in Portland, Oregon recently. After all of the shopping, coffee-drinking and food truck-eating, my friends and I headed back to an adorable apartment that we rented to stay in. I loved the cute vintage-inspired décor. It was so homey and fit with my style so much that I felt like I was staying at a friend’s place. Check out the whole apartment: Take a look at this adorable blue, yellow and pink bedroom. A claw foot bathtub and a vintage radiator? What’s not to love about this vintage chic bathroom? Check out the quirky art and glass cabinets in this fun kitchen. Weekend Finds: Multi-Family Estate Sale
A couple weekends ago I checked out a multi-family estate sale with so many rooms of stuff I got lost trying to find my way out. No joke. It was awesome. Here’s what I found: Cute leather shoes: $8 Wood cutting board with feet: $5 Fabric glasses case: $0.50 White linen: $4 Black and white gingham: $2 The pieces of fabric are for projects you’ll see here on the blog. The shoes and glasses case were just for fun. I’m especially excited about the shoes. They’re so cute! Reimagine how you think about secondhand stuff and you can find some real gems.
